Welcome to the release of the book Gothenburg Fragments – Notes on the 5th conference of the Situationists International 1961-2021.

On the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Situationist International’s 5th conference at Hotel Wolrat Tham in Gothenburg, ten artists met in the same premises to discuss the legacy of Situationism. The 1961 conference is known for the so-called split in the Situationist movement into a political theoretical (continental) branch and an artistic (Scandinavian) branch. During his journey back to Paris from Gothenburg, Guy Debord wrote the so-called Hamburg theses in which the artistic intentions were subordinated to the political goals of the movement.

The fragments laid out in Gothenburg in 2021 can be read as notes on what was left behind and unanswered after the conference in 1961. The book’s contributors have been asked to share input, outcomes and reflections on what happened in August 2021 at the former Hotel Wolrat Tham.

The book contributors are:
Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen
Fredrik Svensk
Saskia Holmqvist
Göran Hugo Olsson och Roxy Fahrat
Andria Nyberg Forshage
Johanna Adolfsson
Fredag Aften
Henrik Andersson
Ambrosius Fjord

During the release, the film The Society of the Spectacle by Roxy Farhat and Göran Hugo Olsson will be shown.

The Bookshop Situation Series at Index is based on events to present books, magazines, records and other artistic formats. The bookshop situation is a way to test content, to share it, to distribute it, offering situations to be part of a community of experimental producers and users.
