Massinissa Selmani's 1000 Villlages presented at the 25th 25th Biennale of Sydney

Two works by Massinissa Selmani are presented at the 25th Sydney Biennial, including the work 1000 Villages, which was exhibited at Index in Stockholm in 2024, first exhibited at the 2015 Venice Biennale.
This drawing‑based work draws on how the project of the “socialist villages,” launched in Algeria in the 1970s, was narrated through its coverage in the press at the time. It explores a memory that persists unevenly: largely erased from certain collective accounts, yet still vivid for those who experienced that moment.
New research around the socialists villages in Algeria, exploring other aspects of this history, continues in collaboration with Natasha Marie Llorens.
