September 2019

Research Processes with artist Anna Barham
British artist Anna Barham has worked with Index throughout 2019 as the first artist in the Research Processes, a series of residencies started at Index in 2019. Barham works with and beyond language, with text, readings, videos and situations. Linguistics and performativity have been the starting point for investigations and exchange between the artist and Index. A workshop and a book release of her new book, Poisonous Oysters, in late September will be a chance to continue this conversation with audiences. Index Research Processes is a program thought of as a tool to define other temporalities and to, in collaboration with artists, establish ways of investigation operating beyond a starting plan or objective.

A big thank you to all the artists, participants and visitors that took part of Index Summer Festival The Defying Parrot. One part character, one part mimesis and one part festival it acted as gathering point for the poly-vocal voices of Index’ learning program. Generating new works and discussions to be continued at Index during the fall, the festival also left behind documentation that you can now access here.

As part of the festival Today is Our Tomorrow at Publics, Index is continuing the learning methodologies developed in the exhibition And Tomorrow And. The workshop is a moment to map, modify and share artistic methods of understanding the role of artists in proposing distinctive and livable futures, to act as a counterpoint to the dominant ideals of the so-called Anthropocene.
