Welcome to the new Index Reading Group, which takes place on the last Wednesday of every month. Over three months, the Spring Season, the reading group focuses on the text Critique of Black Reason, the latest book from critic and Research Professor Achille Mbembe. Discussing a genealogy of Blackness – from the Atlantic slave trade to the present – Mbembe’s book critically reevaluates history, racism, and the future of humanity. The book expands upon and deepens our understanding of the themes in Anna Boghiguian’s exhibition at Index, Woven Winds, which traces the long history of the global cotton trade.

The Spring Season for the reading group takes place over three Wednesdays, 29 March, 26 April and 31 May. It is not necessary to attend all three sessions. Each evening we will read a different section of the book together, taking it in turns to read aloud. This will be accompanied by a short discussion, facilitated by the Index learning team and special guests.

Special guests will join some sessions including academics and artists to provide reflection and introductions, such as Stefan Helgesson from Stockholm University who will join the final session.
