Index 19: RAB-RAB
25 April 2018, 19:00–22:00
Rab-Rab: Journal for Political and Formal Inquiries in Art is an independent journal published in Helsinki. As a platform for combining experimental forms of art practices with radical political positions, the aim of Rab-Rab is to encourage and promote the theoretical production outside of institutions. Rab-Rab Press will be presenting their latest issue at Index 19. The red thread of the fourth issue of Rab-Rab Journal, published in two volumes, is “remembering as future” and it is questioning the status of contemporary in the art inquiries dealing with historical moments of radical political struggles. It includes a dossier on the artistic repercussion of Jacques Ranciére’s research on the forms of proletarian learning, the first English language translations of two experimental texts by Roman Jakobson and the science-fiction story by Viktor Shklovsky, interviews with Tony Conrad and Eddie Prevost, the extensive dossier on Arf-Arf, collective from Australia producing amazing works of concrete poetry, sound art and structuralist films since the eighties, texts by Martta Tuomaala and Minna Henriksson targetting the nerves of today’s right wing neo-liberal cultural politics in Finland.
The second volume is about the most exciting, international, political, and theoretical years of conceptual art group Art & Language. In the Belly of the Beast: Art & Language New York Project 1972-1976, includes an extensive interview with Michael Corris, member of Art & Language and the editor of The Fox, and reproduction of previously unavailable manuscripts, pamphlets, transcripts and letters from the period.
The journal and other publications of Rab-Rab Press, will be presented by editor Sezgin Boynik during the evening.
Index 19 is a series in Index’ front space. Presenting single works, films, readings and discursive events, Index 19 is a space for dialogue with surrounding communities and visitors.
