Screening: Axel Petersén, 6 degrees of Mustafa Arhan
Publication: Willem de Rooij, Index
Winter break

21 December 2016, 17:00–20:00
Index presents the premiere screening of a new short film by Axel Petersén, “6 degrees of Mustafa Arhan”. The film portraits the oriental rug dealer Mustafa Arhan, an 83 year old Malmö legend frequently appearing in the Malmö section of Swedish society pages. For over forty years he has been, or has been playing, the exotic other in Malmö’s high society: a gentleman’s gentleman in the posh part of town of the windy working class city. The film explores, beyond Arhan and his local struggles, themes as exotism, orientalism, cultural assimilation and the urge to fit in but at the same time stick out. The film will be screened starting every 20 minutes. The screening is part of Kortsfilmsdagen 2016.

We are happy to announce the release of the publication “Index: Riots, Protest, Mourning and Commemoration (as represented in newspapers, January 2000 – July 2002)” by Willem de Rooij. The book has been co-produced together with Arnolfini, the Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt and Koenig Books and presents de Rooij’s work “Index”, a collection of 500 images cut from daily newspapers depicting protest marches and moments of collective mourning, in its entirety. With texts by Axel Wieder, Sven Lütticken, Pablo Martinez, 410 pages, 22 × 28,5 cm. The book will be available at Index and through our website soon.

Winter break: Index is closed 22 December until 4 January 2017
