In collaboration with Film i Samtidskonsten, Index presents a screening of Frances Stark’s film “My Best Thing”, its first presentation in Sweden.

Los Angeles-based artist Frances Stark explores image-making and the written word, often drawing on her own personal life and identity as an artist, teacher, and mother. Stark focuses on the life of an artist as it converges with the non-working life of an artist and vice versa.

“My Best Thing” was first presented at the 54th Venice Biennale 2015. The featured-length video uses a text-to-speech animation program and is constructed from interactions in online video chatrooms that Stark visited. A masturbatory love affair between two online avatars develops over 10 episodes into larger discussions on a variety of topics, forming a sharp and amusing narrative. Stark raises questions about the difference between therapeutic confession and performance. The movie highlights the manner in which current communication technologies allow a greater intimacy and anonymity, giving rise to new kinds of behaviors and relationships.

Frances Stark is part of the exhibition Autobiography currently on view at Index.
