A conversation between Willem de Rooij and Daniel Birnbaum: About Images and Education

On the day after the opening of Willem de Rooij’s exhibition at Index, his first major exhibition in Sweden, the artist will discuss with Daniel Birnbaum about questions of represetation and teaching in art at Market Art Fair, Liljevalchs konsthall.

Willem de Rooij (born 1969 in Beverwijk, Netherlands) studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (1990–95) and a resident at Rijksakademie (1997-1998), both in Amsterdam. He worked in collaboration with Jeroen de Rijke from 1994 to 2006, with whom he represented The Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 2005. Recent solo exhibitions by Willem de Rooij include Weltkulturenmuseum Frankfurt, Witte de With Rotterdam (both 2015), Arnolfini in Bristol (2014-15), Jewish Museum, New York (2014), Bergen Kunsthall (2013) and Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2010). He is a professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Germany since 2006.

Daniel Birnbaum is Director of Moderna Museet, Stockholm and former director of and professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Birnbaum was previously an art critic for Dagens Nyheter, director of Iaspis, and curator and director of several major international exhibitions and biennials, including the 2009 Venice Biennale. He is a frequent contributor to Artforum magazine.
