Welcome to Index for the release of As If They Had A Spirit – the first comprehensive monograph covering artist Pontus Pettersson. During the release, the book will be activated in different ways, so please join us in reading, drawing and drinking coffee.

Using drawing and narration, the book expands on Pettersson’s sculptural, poetic and choreographic practice through the accounts and fabulations of long term collaborators. As If They Had A Spirit centers the acts of re-membering, re-telling and re-tracing as situated methods for documenting and studying the protracted and evolving nature of process-based artistic practices.

Those who missed the 3-part series of talks noting the centennial of Lithuanian poet and filmmaker Jonas Mekas arranged by Index and Ord&Bild, are given a new chance to listen in on the conversations – either on a limited-edition cassette tape or in its entirety online. Using Walden as a point of departure, the series spotlighted Mekas’ important role as enabler, organizer, connector of people, and devout advocate for art.

The podcast, with an introduction to the series by Isabella Tjäder and Jonatan Habib Engqvist, can be found here.

The cassette and accompanying podcast as well as the conversations that took place at Index were made in collaboration with Lithuania’s cultural attaché in Sweden, Finland and Denmark Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson. It is produced in partnership with Lithuanian Culture Institute.
