Index

Welcome to a special double event during the final weekend of Josefin Arnell’s exhibition CRYBABY. On Saturday 27 April, Index releases a new podcast produced by ITAB (Index Teen Advisory Board), around what it means to spend time with art, both in the making of, and in the encounter with art works. The podcast opens up a discussion between board members from Index after dialogues with the young boards at Praksis (Oslo) and Publics (Helsinki).

Josefin Arnell returns to Index for a finissage of her exhibition, and enters into a dialogue with the strands woven by ITAB in their new podcast, in a conversation considering temporality through the lens of filmmaking.

With the exhibition HOFPFISTEREI, Index, in close collaboration with Moderna Museet, highlights Vaginal Davis as a writer – presenting a library of text material produced between the 1980s and the present day. The body of work of performance artist, writer, and icon Vaginal Davis chronicles Black queer existence with absurd humor and cutting precision. Her practice comprises performance, text, painting, installation, fanzines and films. Ms. Davis shapeshifts with assurance while moving from scene to scene, changing position and mode of address, to ensure her audience is always uncomfortable; never allowed to grow complacent.

This exhibition has been developed in collaboration with Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as part of the exhibition Vaginal Davis: Magnificent Product. The museum presents a major retrospective of Vaginal Davis’s work while, in parallel, Index is the locus for research on her text production. Vaginal Davis’s solo exhibition Magnificent Product is initiated by Moderna Museet and extends across several locations in Stockholm: Moderna Museet, Nationalmuseum, Accelerator, Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Tensta konsthall and MDT (Moderna Dansteatern). Each institution highlights a different aspect of Vaginal Davis’s expansive practice.

The Index team will be in Venice for the pre-opening of the 60th Biennale di Venezia, where director Marti Manen will be speaking, together with Mint director Emily Fahlén, about the returning format of September Sessions – A Contemporary Art Festival in Stockholm. The conversation takes place at a reception held by IASPIS, also in celebration of the artists Lap-See Lam, one of three artists collaborating on the Nordic Pavilion, and Valeria Montti Colque, the artist presented at the Chilean Pavilion, who performed at Lilljevalchs as part of the 2023 edition of September Sessions.

At this time, it feels critical that Index is able to continue to be engaged in an active discourse with colleagues and collaborators both locally and internationally.

September Sessions – A Contemporary Art Festival in Stockholm is launching its second edition this autumn with a programme spread over various art organizations in the city as well as public spaces in Stockholm. It hosts exhibitions, performances, film screenings, IASPIS Open Studios and social gatherings. September Sessions is an initiative by Mint and Index. The 2024 edition will feature a specific program curated by the Spanish curatorial duo Yaby.
