Before your Eyes: Harun Farocki

Index presents, as the final part of the public program for LIBERATION RADIO, a screening of two films by the prominent German filmmaker Harun Farocki dealing with the war in Vietnam, its mediation and its place in cultural memory.
The first Inextinguishable Fire from 1969 is a critique of the war in Vietnam and the role of industry in the production of chemical weapons. In analyzing the consumption and production of images from the war, he sheds light on the connections between media, technology, politics, and violence.
The second film in the program Before Your Eyes – Vietnam from 1982, examines the absence and distortion of the images from the war in Vietnam within West German society, exploring how mass media and cinema mediate history. By mixing staged sequences, voice-over and found images, Farocki highlights the gap between representation and lived reality.
