June 2025

Ulrika Sparre 1974-2025
In 2020, Ulrika Sparre presented her exhibition EAR TO THE GROUND at Index. In this exhibition, we encountered invisible traces of reality: the sound within stones, secret luminosity, and approaches—from science and nature, but also from faith—to that which we may never fully see.

Ulrika Sparre’s passing leaves us with a deep sense of loss. Yet, we remember her perseverance in seeking the invisible, her ability to transform language into something new, her thoughtful presence, and her generosity. Her work was also featured in the exhibition Index held in Barcelona, and her visits to Index—whether to see exhibitions or simply to share a conversation—were always filled with joy.

We will miss Ulrika deeply, and we will remember her as this remarkable artist who revealed the many layers of reality in our lives.

Sincerely,
Index staff

Program

Index welcomes you to a talk with artists Camilla Crispino and Laressa Dickey. Their presentation follows their residency at Munnen in Bagarmossen, where they will work in the community with 1:1 movement portraits. Their practice proposes an impossible task of trying to catch moments that are already gone, through mark-making. They ask: Is it possible to document the becoming of a moving body by following a line? To transfer onto paper not a supposed copy but the process of its continuous transformation? How can we make the performative notation of a moment? How can we stay with an elusive line in the other, that edge? At Index, they will share the experiences of the practice in the community in Bagarmossen, talk about their collaboration, and do a live practice together.

Learning

In May, the newly elected members of Index Teen Advisory Board (ITAB) gathered for their second meeting at Munnen, a cultural community space and reading room in Bagarmossen, to browse their collection of zines, books, and other publications. We talked about how we relate to art, discussed the complexities of using AI in creative processes, shared references for experimental approaches to publishing, and created mind maps around what sparks our interest for this year’s collaboration with PRAKSIS Teen Advisory Board (Oslo) and Publics Youth (Helsinki). The boards are currently collaborating on Reaching Out, a project exploring how cultural institutions connect and communicate with new and young audiences.

The 2025/2026 Index Teen Advisory Board members are: Mila Frances, Dylan Murray, Moa Zhang, Alice Harling, Riddhima Rat, Alayna Hassan, Kiara Eifert, Tiffany Olafson, Elin Karlsson, Diane Nozynska, and Vilhelm Rosenström Domei.

Sunday Read with Index Teen Advisory Board
What stories shape the art world, and who gets to tell them?
How can writing challenge power, rewrite norms, or make space for what’s missing?
What happens when we talk about art in our own words?

Sunday Read is a monthly gathering for anyone aged 16–21 who wants to read, think, and talk about contemporary art together.

Each session, we’ll explore different kinds of art-related texts, from poems and short stories to exhibition texts, artists’ writings, and something called art theory. Don’t worry if that sounds unfamiliar! Art theory just means thinking and writing about art: how it works, what it means, and why it matters.

You don’t need to know anything beforehand. Just bring your curiosity, your thoughts, and an openness to listen and share.

Next session:

Sunday Read #2, 29 June, 13:00–15:00

Index Archive

As a new feature in the newsletter we will present something from the vast archive of Index. It could be an exhibition, event, images, notes, anecdotes or something else. Our aim is to highlight Index’ long history, showcasing the varied and fascinating program of the institution.

We begin with looking back only a couple of months. During the exhibition CALL IT MUSEUM, a series of small “secret” exhibitions were on display. Some visitors found these exhibitions, located in a secret space created specially for CALL IT MUSEUM; to define other exhibitional temporalities and ways to understand curatorial and institutional practice. The series consisted of four temporal presentations, as follows:

ON FIRE
24 January–2 February 2025

THAT IS, IT IS REALLY NO TRUE CULTURE, BUT ONLY A WAY OF KNOWING ABOUT CULTURE
7–16 February 2025 (curated by Foteini Salvaridi)

FLASH ART N.134 MAY 1987
28 February–16 March 2025

A SERIES OF ARTWORKS WITH DIFFICULT ACCESS
20–23 March 2025
